Frequently Asked Questions

HEALTHY LIVING, HEALTHY GRIEVING

When is it the right time to see a grief counsellor?

When the pain of your sorrow becomes too much to handle, reaching out for new ways to cope may be in order.

When will this grief be over?

No one can say for sure. The intensity of sorrow feels like it will never end. But it does. Help yourself by learning about grief, sharing your thoughts and feelings with others, or getting unstuck in asking “why?”

What happens in the first session?

We begin with getting to know each other. The majority of our time is gathering information as it relates to the reason for your visit. Tell me about the strategies you have tried that works or doesn’t. If you need trauma informed care, increasing awareness of your body sensations, your thoughts and your feelings are important and a short guided meditation helps begin this process. By the end of this session, we can collaborate on a plan and timeline to meet your goals.

Do you give homework or reading between sessions?

As you learn about yourself and new ways to cope, it’s most helpful to apply what you have learned in the real world. Remember you will learn new skills to move with greater ease through your grief.

Types of practices that may be suggested include: self care practices, movement, time in nature. completing worksheets, journal or readings. The choice is always yours.

How does confidentiality work?

The information you share in counselling will not be released without your written consent. I may disclose information for the purpose of clinical supervision in which case your identity will remain confidential.

However, there are limitations to the confidentiality described above including: a) If a child is or may be at risk of abuse, neglect, or in need or protection; b) If the counsellor believes you or another person is at clear and imminent risk of being harmed; or c) In order to comply with a subpoena or other legal orders or if the disclosure is required by law.

What are your hours? cost? receipts? methods of payment?

I provide options to fit the needs of my clients with day, evening and weekend appointments. One hour sessions are $135 each and packages are available. Trauma sessions longer at 80 minutes and charge $150. A sliding scale is also available when helpful. I will provide you with a receipt for service and you can forward this to your insurance provider. E-transfer, credit cards, or cash works for me.

Why do you offer online services? Will you also offer office visits?

Whether its a time crunch or distance, online counselling provides service and convenience to those outside Saskatoon. People can begin grief counselling sessions in the ease and comfort of their home removing travel time and childcare arrangements. My telehealth provider holds the top security standards for counselling sessions. Please ensure you are in a private place without interruption for each session.
